Wellcome Genome Campus
The Wellcome Genome Campus is the genomics research campus at Hinxton, south of Cambridge, home to the Wellcome Sanger Institute and EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute. It is one of the world's leading centres for genome research and biological data.
In practice
The Sanger Institute, founded in 1993 and named after the Nobel laureate Frederick Sanger, was the largest single contributor to the Human Genome Project, sequencing about a third of the human genome. Today it studies the genetics of disease, cancer and pathogens. EMBL-EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, maintains major public databases of biological information used by researchers worldwide. The campus also hosts conferences, training courses and companies working in genomics.
Why it matters to newcomers
Hinxton is about ten miles from Cambridge city centre, and staff commute by campus bus, car or bike. People in the cluster often say "Sanger" or "Hinxton" for the whole campus.
