Cambridge Biomedical Campus
The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is the hospital and medical research site on the southern edge of Cambridge. It brings together three NHS hospitals, the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, research institutes and life-science companies, and the campus describes itself as Cambridge's largest employment site.
In practice
The three hospitals are Addenbrooke's, the Rosie maternity hospital and Royal Papworth Hospital. Research neighbours include the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre, and companies on site include AstraZeneca, with its Discovery Centre, and Abcam, which has its global headquarters there. The campus says more than 22,000 people work there and more than 37,000 visit every day. Cambridge South railway station, on the western edge of the campus, opened on 28 June 2026.
Why it matters to newcomers
If you work in health or life sciences, there is a good chance a job, a collaborator or a seminar will bring you here. If you are visiting a patient or attending an appointment, it helps to know that the site is large and busy, so check which building you need and allow extra time. The new station and the guided busway both give alternatives to driving.
