Cambridge architecture rewards patience. Six structures tell the story of the city across five centuries: a royal chapel, a scientific library, a mathematical puzzle, a ceremonial hall, a romantic bridge, and a Norman church. Built by kings, fellows, and architects including Christopher Wren, Henry Hutchinson, and Henry VIII, they remain the fixed points around which the university and the town revolve.

King's College Chapel

Henry VI laid the foundation stone in 1446. The king intended a modest college chapel; what emerged over the following century is the finest surviving example of English Perpendicular Gothic. Construction stalled during the Wars of the Roses. Henry VII restarted the project in 1508, and his son Henry VIII completed the structure by 1544. The stone came from Clipsham in Rutland, and the oak for the roof from trees felled across East Anglia.

What to look for inside: The fan vault, completed by master mason John Wastell between 1510 and 1515, spans 80 feet and remains the largest of its kind in the world. Twenty-six stained glass windows, installed between 1515 and 1531, depict Old and New Testament scenes. The glass was crafted by continental workshops in the Netherlands. The wooden rood screen, carved by Peter Stocks and others around 1533, separates the ante-chapel from the choir. Henry VIII's initials and those of Anne Boleyn appear on the screen. Rubens' "Adoration of the Magi," installed above the altar in 1968, sits slightly off-center. The painting was a gift from the artist Alfred Allnutt.

The finest external view stands on Clare Street beside the Old Cavendish Laboratory building. From here you see the full length of the chapel's southern wall, its buttresses, and the symmetry of the perimeter windows. The classic frontal view from the Backs, across the river, shows the west front and the two square towers with their crocketed pinnacles.

The Wren Library at Trinity College

Sir Christopher Wren designed the library, completed in 1695, as an upper-floor reading room raised on an open colonnade. The college commissioned the building to house the manuscripts and books donated by Isaac Barrow and others. Construction took from 1676 to 1684, with the interior fittings finished over the following decade. The ground-floor arcade originally served as a covered walkway for fellows.

The interior remains largely as Wren intended. Limewood carvings by Grinling Gibbons decorate the bookcases and shelving ends. Wren positioned the shelves at right angles to the windows so that natural light fell between the rows rather than directly onto the books. The floor is oak, the ceiling plaster, and the room measures roughly 130 feet long.

What to look for: A first edition of Newton's "Principia Mathematica," with Newton's own handwritten annotations in the margins. A. A. Milne's original "Winnie-the-Pooh" manuscript, held in a glass case near the south window. The Capell manuscript of Shakespeare's early plays, donated by Edward Capell in the eighteenth century. Ramanujan's notebooks, containing the mathematical work of Srinivasa Ramanujan during his time at Trinity before 1920.

The best vantage point is from the river path along the Backs. The library sits above the River Cam, and from the opposite bank you can see the full lower arcade and the first-floor windows. The building's western facade faces Nevile's Court, visible from the college grounds.

The Mathematical Bridge at Queens' College

The bridge connecting the older part of Queens' College to the newer buildings across the River Cam dates from 1749. Designed by William Etheridge and built by James Essex the Younger, the structure uses straight timbers arranged in a series of tangent and radial arcs. The timbers form a truss that distributes weight through compression, not through curved beams. No bolts or screws hold the load-bearing members, only iron pins at the joints.

A persistent story claims that students dismantled the bridge to understand its construction and failed to reassemble it, forcing the college to add the iron bolts visible today. The bolts are original to Etheridge's design. The bridge was rebuilt in 1866 and again in 1905 using the same plans, with the iron pins replaced each time.

What to look for: The radial pattern of the timbers. Each piece of wood is straight, but the arrangement creates the visual impression of an arch. The tangent members running along the bridge's underside, which carry the load to the abutments on both banks. The iron pins at each joint, visible as dark dots against the oak.

The strongest view is from the river, looking upstream from a punt. From water level you can see the underside geometry clearly, and the way the bridge appears to curve despite using only straight timber. From the Silver Street bridge nearby, you see the bridge from the side, where the tangent structure is most visible.

The Senate House

James Gibbs designed the Senate House, built between 1722 and 1730, as the ceremonial center of the university. The building sits between King's College Chapel and Gonville and Caius College on a narrow site. Gibbs, an architect trained in Rome and working in the Palladian style, gave the building a classical stone facade with a portico of four Corinthian columns. The exterior is Portland stone.

The interior is a single tall room used for university ceremonies, degree congregations, and meetings of the Regent House, the governing body of the university. The ceiling features a painted panel by Giovanni Battista Cipriani, installed in the 1770s, depicting the figure of Geometry surrounded by academic allegories.

What to look for: The four Corinthian columns on the west front, each carved from a single block of Portland stone. The Cipriani ceiling panel, visible from the main hall during open periods. The wooden galleries running along the interior walls, added in the nineteenth century to accommodate larger degree ceremonies.

The best view is from Senate House Hill, the small rise on King's Parade immediately outside the building. From this spot the full facade is visible, framed by the chapel on the left and the Caius Gate of Honour on the right.

The Bridge of Sighs at St John's College

Henry Hutchinson designed this covered bridge in 1831, modelling it on the Ponte dei Sospiri in Venice. The bridge crosses the River Cam between the Third Court and New Court at St John's College. Built of stone with a roof and latticed windows, it is one of the most photographed structures in Cambridge. The name came after construction, a romantic comparison rather than an architectural one. Unlike its Venetian namesake, the bridge never served as a passage for prisoners.

Hutchinson worked in the Gothic Revival style, and the bridge connects two buildings designed in a similar idiom. The lattice windows are Gothic in form, and the stone is Bath stone, pale grey and finely cut.

What to look for: The traceried stone window openings, each with a pointed arch. The contrast between the covered bridge and the open Mathematical Bridge downstream at Queens', a useful comparison of two approaches to spanning the Cam. The view from beneath the bridge, where the stone vault creates an acoustic echo.

The best vantage point is from the river, looking north from a punt passing under the bridge. The covered span is visible against the skyline of New Court's Gothic towers. From the St John's side of the river, the bridge is seen from a garden path that leads to the Third Court entrance.

The Round Church

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, known locally as the Round Church, stands on Round Church Street near St John's College. Built around 1130, it is one of only four round churches in England, modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The original builders are unknown, though the church was associated with the confraternity of the Holy Sepulchre, a group of local clergy.

The round nave, with its heavy Norman columns and rounded arches, is the oldest part. The chancel was added in the thirteenth century, and the bell tower in the fifteenth. The building was restored by Anthony Salvin in 1841, who repaired the nave and added a conical roof to the round section, replacing a earlier flat roof.

What to look for: The eight Norman columns in the round nave, each with simple scalloped capitals. The rounded arches between the columns, typical of twelfth-century English church building. The conical roof added by Salvin, which gives the church its distinctive silhouette from the street. The Victorian stained glass in the chancel, installed after the restoration.

The best view is from the small green opposite the church on Round Church Street, where the full circular form is visible. From Bridge Street, approaching from the south, the round nave and bell tower are seen together against the sky.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Mathematical Bridge called mathematical?

The name refers to the geometry of its construction. William Etheridge designed the bridge using tangent and radial arcs, meaning the straight timbers are arranged along lines that touch and radiate from imaginary circles. The structure is a practical application of geometrical principles. Each timber carries load through compression along its length. The bridge demonstrates that a curved form can be built from straight elements if the geometry is correct. The name "Mathematical Bridge" came into common use in the nineteenth century.

Can you walk across the Mathematical Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs?

The Mathematical Bridge is a footbridge within Queens' College and can be crossed on foot during college visiting periods. The bridge connects the main college buildings with the newer courts across the Cam. The Bridge of Sighs at St John's College is also a functional bridge, connecting the Third Court with New Court. Access depends on college policies for visitors. Both bridges are best seen from the river below, either from a punt or from the public path along the Backs.

Is the Round Church still used for worship?

The Round Church was used as a parish church until 1994. Since then it has been run by a Christian heritage trust and serves as a visitor centre with information about the history of Christianity in Cambridge. The building is a Grade I listed structure maintained by English Heritage. The round nave is open to the public, and the chancel contains displays on the history of the church and the university.
