Cambridge A–Z

Mill Road

Mill Road is the long street in east Cambridge lined with independent shops, international grocers, cafés and restaurants, the most diverse high street in the city. It runs from near Parker's Piece out across the railway bridge to Romsey, and is the opposite of the College-dominated centre: residential, mixed and almost entirely independent.

In practice

Along Mill Road you will find Middle Eastern, South Asian, East Asian and Eastern European food shops, vintage and charity shops, bike shops, places of worship of many faiths and some of the city's best-value restaurants. Every December the Mill Road Winter Fair closes the road for a day of stalls, music and parades. The streets of Victorian terraces around it, Petersfield and Romsey, are popular with young professionals, academics and families.

Why it matters to newcomers

Mill Road is where Cambridge does its everyday shopping and eating, away from the tourist centre. If you are looking for a flat within cycling distance of the station and the centre, the area around it is worth a look.
