Choral Evensong
Choral Evensong is an evening church service of prayer, readings and music, sung by a choir. In Cambridge it is part of daily life in several College chapels, and at King's College Chapel the services are free and open to visitors and College members alike.
In practice
At King's, Evensong is typically held six days a week. On most occasions the College Choir sings, and on Mondays the mixed-voice choir King's Voices. The chapel asks visitors to allow up to an hour, to arrive in good time because people are not admitted once a service has begun, and not to bring bags larger than airline hand luggage. Recording and photography are not allowed during services.
Why it matters to newcomers
Evensong is a free way to hear a Cambridge College choir in its own building, and King's says that all are welcome. Check the chapel's service calendar before you go, because times and choirs vary, and arrive early if you want a seat in the main part of the chapel.
