Cambridge A–Z

Cambridge Enterprise

Cambridge Enterprise is the University's commercialisation arm: the office that moves research out of departments and into the economy through consultancy, intellectual property management, licensing, new-company formation and seed funding. Where the spin-out is the vehicle, Cambridge Enterprise is the garage.

In practice

For founders it offers company-creation support, mentoring, investor introductions and early-stage equity investment from University capital. The scale is public: the Ventures portfolio holds 174 companies valued at £104 million in total, and the University of Cambridge Enterprise Fund, launched in 2012 with Parkwalk, lets alumni and outside investors back spin-outs alongside the University. Founders bring the research; the office helps shape the proposition and business model and can provide the first cheques.

Why it matters to newcomers

If you research here and your work has commercial potential, this office is the front door, not an optional extra: talk to them before signing anything with anyone else. If you invest or hire, a Cambridge Enterprise portfolio company has passed an institutional filter, which is information, not a guarantee. Our chronicle explains the route from laboratory to market.
